Cincy Mayor Mallory Endorses Fisher for Senate

Leading up to tomorrow's big Q2 FEC announcements, the Fisher campaign added another name to the growing pile of endorsements adding Cincinnati Mayor Mark Mallory earlier this morning. In the release from the campaign, Mallory cited Fisher's "...deep understanding of the economic opportunities and challenges facing Ohio’s cities"

As we've done at the end of every benchmark during the campaign, we'll have a complete assessment of the State of the Senate Race either tomorrow or Thursday following the announcement of fundraising numbers. Beyond that info, there is still much happening on the field with the Fisher campaign remaining mum on the issue surrounding a late property tax bill owned by Jennifer Brunner's 22 yr old son. The Fisher campaign has not returned requests from OhioDaily or BuckeyeStateBlog asking for denials of leaking that information to the press. BSB has more on the original Plain Dealer piece as well as a take on the follow-up which appeared there today.

Fisher of Pols

The way the Fisher campaign has been releasing these endorsements (a few a week, typically in response to something being done by the Brunner camp), you have to think most of them were in the bag either before he announced his bid, or just after Ted declared his support. If that's true, Brunner is going to need a lot more than the love of the blogosphere to overcome the impression that she's over matched.

I'm also more than a little troubled, if we assume Fisher is going to be the nominee, that he continues to play defense at almost every moment (the Naymik tempest notwithstanding...if Modern's source is right and that's how Fisher plays offense (a BIG if), maybe he should stick to defense). Portman is going to be bringing it a LOT harder than Brunner is right now, and I've not seen anything yet that shows Lee is prepared to "take the fight to the enemy."

Yes, I'm bothered that this campaign refuses to play ball with us (or BSB, or anyone else in the new media). It seems to me that micro-managing a candidate is a great way to lose support. What's more, the people who care enough to even read these blogs are your hardcore, party activist types. Wouldn't it make some sense to do some outreach so they feel like you're a human being before you need them?

Lastly, nothing bothers me more than politics by succession (my issue with Hillary's candidacy), or the sense that it can somehow be one's "turn" at office just by virtue of sticking around and paying dues. By that logic, Bill Batchelder should probably be running for Governor for the Republicans. I'm not saying Lee isn't the best candidate, but let's at least have that conversation before anointing him the chosen one, shall we?

A few thoughts

Yes, Fisher had Mallory's support in the bag. Mallory was a "Facebook book friend of Lee's campaign" from the beginning, and I got confirmation at the time that he was supporting Brunner but that they would officially announce his endorsement at a later time.
