Falling Backwards
There is nothing more insufferable than an idea man. They always have opinions and can't wait to share them with you. To invite them into your life is to subject oneself to a never-ending deluge of uninvited opinions on anything from your choice in romantic partners to the best methods for cleaning one's own backside. Thanks to the miracle that is the blogosphere idea men can harangue readers around the world completely unfettered from normal constraints such as time, space or common courtesy.
I am an idea man. Woe to the progressive political insider that develops even the smallest of personal relationships with me, for to do so is to let in the never ending stream of opinions I have on how campaigns should be run.
Back when Barack Obama took the lead against Hilary Clinton I wrote some of my darkest stuff. It was clear to many of us that they were going to pull all the stops in trying to defeat him. Since they couldn't do it by winning pledged delegates in primaries, they would have to resort to swaying super delegates, and how could they convince super delegates to undercut their own base? The only way I saw it was through good ol' fashioned character assassination. I titled the piece, "He Has to Destroy Her." I was well aware of how the game was played, and knew that there was no team more Machiavellian than the Clintons. The playbook was time tested; LBJ's infamous primary run against Coke "Mr Texas" Stevenson being one of the most famous examples. Obviously, the only way to counter a campaign willing to say or do anything was to hammer her down with her own record. We've learned from the mistakes of the past. Obama had to play hardball.
He didn't. I never posted the article. It just didn't seem right. Many bloggers echoed my sentiments. They were all equally ignored. Instead of attack answered with counter attack enjoining the death spiral that is modern America politics, Obama did something strange: he lead. He wasn't defending himself; he wasn't making excuses; he was rising above it, and what is more he was winning because of it. As I like to say, every attack is an opportunity, and the Obama campaign turned every one of them to their advantage. If he was going to win, it was going to be on his terms and on the terms that the vast majority of American's dream our modern political discourse would become.
Obama knew what he was doing, and for once I had nothing to say.
I trust that he will pick the best Vice President for the campaign, and if it's Hillary Clinton, well... so be it. I'm sure that he must have a good reason if he thinks he needs her in the job. I have a million opinions but somehow I don't think that my perspective is any better than his and I trust him to make the right choices. Man, what a wonderful yet strange feeling.
I'm closing my eyes now and falling backwards, confident that Obama and his team are going to catch me and our country. I know it's hard, but it's an amazing feeling when it happens and I can't afford to miss the chance.

I reserve the right
To smack his ass upside the head if he picks her.
Best comment ever
Maybe not the most thoughtful but I love a comment that makes me laugh out loud. :-)
Sidenote: I met a Clinton supporter who thinks she might vote for McCain if (get this) if... McCain chooses Leiberman as his running mate. My head almost exploded! She is a smart woman and I think she was just posturing since she was a huge Clinton supporter but still - I was dumbfounded.
Best comment ever
I agree with your entire comment Cindy. Let me add yet another SIDEBAR.
Question: Could the Clintonistas be so hung up in the past that they are ready and willing to destroy what they think is their Party?
Answer: Get your collective heads out of your @$$e$! This is "The Peoples Party" not some God foresaken Ming-ish Dynasty!
I'll climb back in my box now...
Nah
They are just disappointed - any destruction they do is most likely driven by pure emotion. I don't think they'd (clintons supporters) would work to sabatoge Obama. Actually, I suspect, after they get over the emotional aspects of the loss, they'll be supporters. Of course, it really hinges on how Bill and Hillary behave but - I still hold the Clintons in pretty high regard. I guess, we'll see though.
I hope your box is air conditioned. :-)
New Box
LOL...it was thoughtful and straight from the heart!!
They may have to put me in the will vote for McCain if he picks her as VP box.
BULLSHIT
You'll do no such thing and you know it.
Barack Speaks To HQ Staff & Volunteers
This video dovetails into this nicely.
Great article
Excellent writing!
This is the first article of yours that I have read, and I can not agree more with your feelings, before, and now.

Yup
You wrote, "Obama did something strange: he lead."
Exactly. He ignored the extremist, vitriolic, revenge and punishment-oriented same old same old politics as usual tactics because if only one thing works for him, it is being internally consistent: saying things will be different and then actually BEING and ACTING differently.
That's what I wanted and expected, particularly over the last two to four weeks. And that's what he did.
Now, if he can get his followers to emulate this demonstration of integrity, we really would be talking about change.
Presidential Election
I'm posting from Rochester, NY and am very interested in who the voters of Ohio are leaning to to win the Presidential election. We in NY are always considered a "Blue" state and always end up going for the Dem candidate, no matter what. But I'm curious as to how the important swing states will vote this year. I see this site favors Obama, although Hillary had won Ohio in the primary. Does this mean voters in your state will favor Obama? And while I'm asking...how do you think the other swing states will go (in light of the issue of Obama not favoring well with the blue-collar workers, older folks, et all?). Many of us in my area were wondering what your thoughts were and if there are polls going on to shed some light. Thanks..:D
It will be close
Hi Diane! Thanks for your comment.
There were more bloggers in Ohio supporting Obama than Clinton, but obviously the majority of Democrats voting in the primary went the other way.
The polls have showed a close race between Obama and McCain in our state. My sense is that there are quite a few Republicans who don't like McCain, which will hurt him, but there are quite a few Democrats who for whatever reason (and many for a bad reason) won't pull the lever for Obama.
However, the economy in Ohio is unspeakably bad, and Republicans have more or less dominated this state for decades, so there is reason to think that voters will continue to turn against the Republican party here. It feels like a change election, and Obama represents change more convincingly than McCain. So there is reason to be optimistic.
What's up with your Gov. Strickland?
Thanks, Jeff, for the recap! Believe it or not..we talk about your state and wonder about the "how Ohio goes, so goes the Nation" :D. I say it's up to all of you to help us get the change in government that will improve the economy (among so many other things). But what's with Strickland making a public statement like he did saying he will not be accepting veep position? I know he campaigned strongly for Hillary, and I thought he would've been a good possibility, but he is declining. Do you think that will hurt the Obama campaign there? I would think it's exciting to live in a state and know you have the ability to influence the election :D. My area is strongly Republican (I am Dem), but our whole state is always carried by NYCity. This will be a nail-biter election, for sure.
Help with the economy..food for your area
I had to add one more thing because we are all trying to feed our families with limited resources..here is a site anyone can visit (angelfoodministries.com) to read about how to visit their local church in their area to buy food for a LOW, LOW price. I am posting a link so you can see the examples of what you get for $30 and the meat specials offered for $20 or less, when you order at least 1 Basic Box. Navigate around to find your closest location, call them and get the info. Believe me--it is well worth it!! The meats are excellent..steaks tender, thick, juicy :D. If this will help even one family..it's worth it! They are in almost all of the states now. Just came here to Rochester 3 months ago, and it's a huge hit.
