Help GOTF (Get Out The Food) in Cleveland

Expecting long lines at polling places, there is an effort underway in Cleveland to deliver food to key polling places in order to help encourage voters to stay in line.

Organizers have identified 23 high-performing polling locations and plan to deliver food to them throughout the day. They are hoping that individuals or groups will adopt a precinct for the duration, providing coffee and donuts in the morning and pizza and snacks in the evening. Their goal is not to serve a meal, but to give all voters a brief bite and a smile of gratitude.

The anticipated budget for each site will run about $500, so the group is actively fund-raising. Anyone who can help out, whether by delivering food or otherwise contributing to the cause, should contact Shana Johnson at 216-403-9222 or shanarene-at-gmail-dot-com.

Meanwhile, the Obama campaign has contacted supporters with suggestions about how to make the wait line wait "not only tolerable but enjoyable and and even fun":

* Bring a lawn chair for yourself and even more for others. People will love you for it.
* Strike up a conversation with others in line if they seem interested in talking.
* Bring newspapers, magazines and comic books. You can share them with your line neighbors once you are done reading them.
* Bring a crossword puzzle or use the one in the newspaper. You may even find someone who'd like to help you.

The message points out that "if you help one person stay in line, you will be making a difference."

Citizens of Haiti have

Citizens of Haiti have resorted to literally eating dirt – making cookie sized clumps of dirt and eating them, which exposes them to an untold number of bacteria and possible infections. This last month, there was a resolution that went before the floor at the United Nations, and it was whether or not food was a fundamental human right, and it passed by a margin of 180 to 1. There were no abstentions, or nations that didn't have an opinion, and only 7 countries were absent. The sole opposition to the resolution was the United States of America. The reason must have been sound – it had to do with opposition to the wording of the resolution – but that doesn't change the fact that it happened.
