More on Obama/ODP Campaign Coordination
On Tuesday I raised the issue of whether the Obama campaign in Ohio would impede or displace the Ohio Democratic Party's coordinated campaign on behalf of downticket races, based on a report out of Iowa. Today Todd Hoffman, Director of Internet Operations for the ODP, distributed a joint memo from the ODP and the Obama campaign outlining a cooperative campaign effort - the text of which is reprinted on BSB here.
Titled "Unprecedented Cooperation between the Obama campaign and the Ohio Democratic Party," the memo says that the two have "moved quickly to combine their operations in a way that will win elections at all levels in Ohio." As reported in Iowa, key staffers "at the Columbus HQ and in the field across the state" have been transferred to the Obama campaign, and the Obama campaign is headquartered in the ODP building in Columbus. The memo appears to indicate that the 4,000 "neighborhood leaders" previously recruited by the ODP for door-to-door canvassing are to be swept into the Obama campaign, and the following steps will be taken to "make sure we have victories at all levels in November":
Recruiting 10,000 more volunteer canvassers: Ohio has 11,500 precincts. By September 1st, we want every precinct covered by at least one volunteer, and “heavied up” with multiple canvassers in our most important precincts.Additional polling to further understand Ohio’s voters: Better data about voters’ issues and value preferences mean canvassers have more effective conversations at the door, that mail and phones are more precisely targeted, and that paid resources are being more effectively spent.
Aggressive voter registration drives and knocking doors: This election will be won by neighbors talking to their neighbors and bringing as many new voters into the process as possible. It is crucial that this work is done now on a statewide scale.
Also today, Justin Miller has a story at PolitickerOH.com with more details. He reports that Obama canvassers will ID voters in General Assembly and Congressional races as well as the presidential race, an improvement over the presidential-only effort in 2004. All the data will go into ODP voter files that are available to downticket campaigns. A local party official told Miller that the Obama campaign plans to hire "300 paid organizers for its field work, 25 in Franklin County alone," and Obama communications director Isaac Baker promised "a very significant field presence in every corner of Ohio and every community across the state."
Miller also indicates that the Obama campaign has hired Greg Schultz, a former legislative liaison for Gov. Ted Strickland, as deputy political director. It has also hired Jackie Bray, deputy field director for Hillary Clinton's Ohio campaign, as its statewide field director. In addition to Aaron Pickrell, this gives the Obama campaign at least three top staffers who are intimately familiar with campaigning in Ohio.

Don't waste your time in OH
OH will go for McCain. The Obama campaign NAFTA lie in the primaries will be brought up as well as the other Obama lies and flip flops. In addition, Gov Strickland sent a very strong message to Ohioans when he turned down Obama for VP. Ohioans want someone who they can trust. McCain hasn't lied to them. Ohio will turn Republican in the Fall.
Re: Don't Waste Your Time in OH
PLEASE... Ohio is full of intelligent people capable of making a decision based on the facts presented to them. We have a man who stands for a chance; an opportunity for our nation to come together as one. He does not promise the HE will save us, but asks us to stand together to help save ourselves. What better message could Ohioans ask for? I think that you will be surprised to see that young and old alike will align to the left this fall and vote with the "heart of it all" FOR Barack Obama. It really IS time for a change. I believe this is the man to lead us in making that change happen.
Re: Don't Waste Your Time in OH
Amen to this post !!!! Use your thinking cap folks !! Do we want more of the same ? I firmly believe that Obama will take this country in the right direction!!
Amen to this post !!!!
Ohio is full of intelligent people THAT WON'T VOTE FOR OBAMA!
We need a man that STANDS for change and not flip-flop about it.
1. Public Financing vs. none
2. Action against Iran vs. action
3. Support his friend Rev. Wright vs. against him
4. Partial Birth Abortion vs. not
5. Against the war vs. "responsible withdrawal"
6. No negative campaigning vs. Attacking Mccain
This guy is a liar and will say anything to get elected and not right for the Democrat Party.
THANK GOD Ohio voters are intelligent people capable of making a decision based on the facts.
Double posting
Double posting shill.
Put your name on your opinions coward.
Right, McCain will win Ohio
If Obama is nominated McCain WILL win Ohio.
McCain wants to go head to head with Obama NOT Hillary. McCain campaign thinks he will be beaten by Hillary.
Why?
However, if Hillary is nominated the state will sweep democrat, because NO DOUBT she will chose Ted Strickland as her VP and he is not stupid enough to decline a serious offer. Declining speculation from news outlets is one thing, declining a serious offer is another. It would mean to much for Ohio. Attention, jobs, funding....Picking Ted would win her all the surrounding states and much of the Midwest. Plus he is Mr. Clean for vetting.
Obama is NOT the nominee yet....he is the presumptive nominee. Let's get past Roll Call vote on Wednesday before any final decisions are made.
As far as facts go Hillary has retained her delegates AND Obama hasn't paid her debt as he agreed.
My contacts are telling me that McCain's manager and Hillary's brother met yesterday..I take that as a salvo fired against DNC. (Nominate me, or else)
Obama has had terrific support in Ohio, largely due to young people but there is a long history of enthusiastic support for candidates from youth and terrible turn out from them in elections. College kids can't be seriously counted on to turn out in great numbers because of social acceptance.
There are numerous social incentives for attending rallies but none for voting. 7:30 A.M on Tuesday Nov. 4th, students don't take a date, there are no drunken "I voted" parties afterward and they still have to attend class on Wednesday. Plus many of them are registered in their home precinct (which means in past years, they voted provisional) and they have no idea where their college address, polling pace is located, so they won't bother.
Don't count on the youth vote in Ohio, and don't count on Obama to win here either, against McCain.
Ted Strickland knew this, which is why he supported Hillary in the first place.
Obama VP Bayh?

LENEXA, Kan. -- After weeks of speculation and days of intense rumors, the answer to who Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama would name as his running mate may have come down to a bumper sticker printed in Lenexa.
