Via email - I just love this:

Rick Shriver, Candidate for the State Senate representing Meigs County, will be appearing in Pomeroy on Tuesday, August 5, at 6:00 PM. Shriver, who is a County Commissioner in Morgan County, has also been a professional musician for nearly forty years. He performs with his two sons, and is bringing his show to the Riverfront in Pomeroy.

Shriver is appearing in each of the nine counties in the 20th Senate District in what he is calling the “Taking Our Values to Columbus Tour.” Shriver, a lifelong resident of his family farm in Morgan County, believes that “we need someone to take our values to Columbus, not the other way around.”

The tour and the Meigs County appearance are aimed at helping to raise funds for the “Rick Shriver for State Senate” campaign. While there is no charge to attend, campaign contributions will be accepted at the event.

“Bring a lawn chair, meet Rick, and enjoy some good music, refreshments and fun along the riverfront,” declared Randy Hart, Meigs County Coordinator for Shriver’s campaign. The event is being sponsored by Citizens to Elect Rick Shriver.

Exactly What We Need

What Shriver is doing here is exactly what the Democratic party in this state needs to do to win in rural areas. He's showcasing himself, THEN getting into the policy.

Having grown up in a pretty rural part of the state, I can tell you that in thinly populated areas, we like to get to know the person first, and after that we make our judgments on what they think. If we believe you're a good person, odds are we're willing to go out a limb and trust your judgment, even when it doesn't mesh exactly with ours.

Brilliant move, and one folks in other similar races can learn from.
