"Barns for Obama" Video
Here is the new video highlighting the Campaign for Change's outreach to rural voters, symbolized by the painting of a "Barn for Obama" in Trumbull County:
Doug O'Brien, the Rural Vote Director for the Obama campaign in Ohio, has this to say about the effort:
Sen. Obama has a strong track record of standing up for rural values, and we are reaching out to every corner of the state to make sure that message is heard. We’ve opened offices in towns across rural Ohio— from Findlay to New Lexington to Marietta— to let Ohioans know which presidential candidate supports America’s rural communities and family farms.
UPDATE: Obama staffers in Ohio are very excited about the rural voters initiative. The campaign has much work to do as far as overcoming misconceptions and hesitation on the part of rural voters, as detailed in this story in U.S. News & World Report today. However, the success of Ted Stickland, Sherrod Brown, and Zack Space in southeastern Ohio shows that Democratic candidates can attract votes here by focusing on economic issues. As Space says in the article, "people care less about the party labels than about jobs and the economy," and voters increasingly associate their personal economic woes with the policies of President Bush and, by association, John McCain.
