Silda Wall Spitzer
According to the Associated Press Governor Elliot Spitzer now has the qualifier “former” in front of the title Governor.
Gov. Eliot Spitzer resigned in disgrace Wednesday after getting caught in a call-girl scandal that shattered his corruption-fighting, straight-arrow image, saying: “I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.”
I had chosen not to write about this because I think more than a political embarrassment for the state of New York, it is a personal tragedy for his family. But as I continued to read about this developing story, I became more frustrated with each story.
My question is this…What in our culture makes many Americans believe that they have the right or the obligation to judge the relationships of other people? Jill Miller Zimon has an interesting post related to this topic on her blog Writes Like She Talks.
I find it baffling that the culture in which we live that has created an insatiable appetite for gossip in this country has now led so many people to comment on the relationships of public figures like Elliot and Silda Spitzer or Bill and Hillary Clinton.
Why does it matter to so many people if the wife decides to try to preserve the marriage or if she leaves him? It really should not. We should worry about our own lives and not give advice or criticism to people that have not asked for our opinions. Leave the advice-giving to their friends, family, and/or clergy. It is none of our business!
