Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner (D-Columbus) has been a stalwart champion of free and fair elections. Without her there would have been no EVEREST Report that revealed security flaws in electronic voting machines, no move toward optical scanners with their verifiable paper trail, no shakeup of the dysfunctional Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, none of the many other actions she has taken to help improve elections. She has put forward her recommendations and directives without flinching at partisan opposition. For all this she was awarded the JFK Library Foundation Profiles in Courage Award, and very appropriately her re-election campaign is planning a reception to congratulate her in Columbus on May 20th. Chris Dole, county commissioner candidate running as an independent, will speak at the May meeting of the Blue Ash-North East Democratic Club. The meeting is set for Tuesday, May 20 at 7 PM at the Blue Ash Golf Course, 4040 Cooper Road. Dole, a long-time Democrat and Crosby Township trustee, decided to run after learning that county Democrats would not field a candidate against Republican Greg Hartmann for county commissioner. In exchange, Republicans agreed not to endorse a candidate running against Commissioner Todd Portune. Dole said the deal between the two parties was “an abuse of the electoral system. As Americans, how can we let anyone take our vote away from us?” Many rank-and-file Democrats were also upset by the two-party deal, but the Hamilton County Democratic Party refused to officially endorse Dole in his race against Hartmann. The May 20 meeting is an opportunity for area residents to meet Chris Dole and learn about his campaign plans, said Carol Heideman, president of the Blue Ash – North East Democratic Club. | ||

Laura Scher of Credo Action calls on Ohio progressives to meet with Sen. George Voinovich (R) at his Cleveland district office at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 27th, to call on him to pass the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act. Lilly Ledbetter worked 19 years at Goodyear before she learned the men at her level were earning far more. Eventually she sued and Goodyear fought her all the way to the Supreme Court —- where five male justices ruled her claim invalid because the pay disparity resulted from discrimination that occurred more than 180 days before her lawsuit was filed. This ruling gutted the Equal Pay Act, since unlike terminations and other overt employment actions the situation of unfair pay tends to develop slowly and silently. HR 2831, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, will restore the ability of plaintiffs to seek redress for unfair pay when the unfair pay occurred within the statutory 180 day period, without regard to whether the discriminatory action occurred earlier. This bill passed the U.S. House by 225-199 last July, but Republican prevented it from reaching the floor of the Senate on a 56-42 cloture vote on April 23rd. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Avon) voted to bring the measure to a vote, Sen. George Voinovich (R-Cleveland) voted against. Laura Scher says that the Lilly Ledbetter bill may come to a vote in the Senate again soon, and asks for your help in pressuring Voinovich to vote for this important social justice legislation. Click here to take action. The meeting at Voinvovich's district office will be at 12:00 noon on Tuesday, May 27th, at 1240 East Ninth Street, Room 3061, in Cleveland. Start: 5:00 pm

From the blog: It's official now. The Cincinnati, Dayton, and Northern Kentucky chapters of Drinking Liberally are going to be celebrating DL's 5th anniversary on Thursday, May 29th, at Fries Cafe, on 3247 Jefferson Avenue in Clifton (current home of Cincinnati DL District 1). We'll be partying on the upstairs patio starting at 7:00. As a bonus to the evening, we're going to have live music from 9-11 p.m., courtesy of Peter Adams and the Nocturnal Collective. They've become a regular on college stations across America, and their second album, I Woke With Planets In My Face, has already received accolades from Spin Magazine. These guys are one of the best bands in Cincinnati, and we're very lucky to have gotten them to play for this event. Burgers, hot dogs, and brats will be sold (we're working on some vegetarian options), and the Fries bartenders will have just about any alcoholic beverage you want, including the 5th anniversary signature drink, The Superdelegate. What's in a Superdelegate? Well, just like the real superdelegates, we're not going to tell you until the very last minute. As a bonus, we'll have several local candidates in attendance for you to meet. So, to summarize: cool people, great drinks, food off the grill, awesome entertainment. We look forward very much to seeing you at the party on the 29th. Please feel free to pass this along to friends, family, neighbors, enemies, liberal-minded organizations you're associated with...anyone that you think would enjoy this, let them know, it's going to be a great time! End: 8:30 pm
